Overview
The Emma Center is a testament to the power of built environments in addressing real-world problems and enhancing the lives of those affected by them. Inspired by my sister Emma's journey with type one diabetes, I set out to address the pressing issue of diabetes, particularly its prevalence among young people in Finland. With the highest rate of type one diabetes globally, especially among children and teenagers under 19, the need for a specialized center became evident. The Emma Center was designed as a community-oriented haven, serving as an educational hub for children, teenagers, and their families dealing with diabetes. It offers essential resources to help them manage their condition more effectively and provides accommodations for newly diagnosed individuals and their families. Beyond just medical support, this center fosters a sense of community and normalcy by uniting individuals with shared experiences. Through various activities and classes, it empowers them to navigate the complexities of diabetes with confidence, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for all.
